Phil's friend from highschool/college invited us to his wedding in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico. I was at first excited, and then freaked out after I realized it was smack dab in the middle of Mexico, 3 hours north of Mexico City. From following the news I knew things were pretty sketchy down there, so I was convinced we were going to be kidnapped. Or worse. The day after we booked our tickets there was a horrible story in the news about a group of people found dead on the side of the road, decapitated and dismembered. So naturally I was a mess.
So we left our kids w/ my mom who came up and became super-nanny/entertainer and headed south.
Our hotel was amazing. This city was amazing. This is a view from our veranda.
View from our room out the window. No screens! So gorgeous and clear!
View from our room.
The ceiling of our room. I kept wondering what was holding the bricks up, and why aren't they going to fall and kill me in the night. Worry much?
View of the largest church in the city. The cross was lit up at night.
Just another view out our window. The colors here are so vibrant!
View from the roof of our hotel. This is looking down on the street. In the middle of the night the first night we heard gunshots. So we were worried. Then we heard a band and then wailing. There was a religious parade going down the street and it was so cool. This city was full of religion which was so refreshing b/c it seems like back home it's not PC to believe in Christ.
Where we had breakfast. We ate there everyday b/c it was so yummy!
We took a long walk all around the city. I loved all the cobblestone streets and interesting doors.
Who needs barbed wire when you have broken glass? brilliant!
Many of the buildings had gorgeous flowering vines on them. so pretty!
Almost to the top of the city w/ me, Chris and Milica
We made it to the overlook! Gorgeous. You can see to the far right that large church where our hotel was. We walked faaaar (in high heels I might add)
me and my man
college roomies-Phil, Chris and Mike
At the wedding cocktail reception the night before the wedding. Mike, Phil, Dan's dad and Dan (the groom)
Rooftop view. From the street this looks like nothing, you enter and voila! Amazing!
Me and my pashmina I bought from a street vendor.
After the reception was a traditional (for this city) Mexican parade through the town. In the front is a donkey carrying tons of alcohol, then the freaky bride/groom puppets, then a mariachi band, then the bride and groom and lastly a bunch of singing/drunk wedding party members. Everyone was holding mugs that people walked around re-filling. I was shocked nobody fell and broke an ankle walking on the cobblestone streets!
It was such a fun experience! More than half the wedding party were Mexican (the bride is) and so they sang along w/ the band and it was just so cool!
The donkey reeked. Really, really bad. Poor fella.
The following day Phil and I went off on our own for some exploring. We breakfasted.
Shopped and enjoyed the scenery. We didn't know it, but this is the square of the church where the wedding was.
I love how they trimmed these trees!
Inside the large church. Those 2 girls in the front were little beggars. It was heart-breaking the amount of kids walking around begging for money. They would be out as late as midnight. The mother in me couldn't stop staring at them on the verge of tears!
View of the stairs in our hotel.
Then we went up these stairs.
Then these stairs.
Then these.
Then these-and that's our room! So cool and private!
Right outside our room.
The church where the wedding was.
Inside the church, Phil is all the way in the front, and this is Elaine and Sara. We had fun w/ them!
Saying I do!
Phil read some scriptures.
He did a great job and didn't even get nervous!
The boys looking dapper.
Phil, Ariane, Dan and Mike
At the reception after the wedding.
Elaine and Sara
Chris and Karen DeJohn
Mike was the best man and gave a great speech!
Things are starting to get crazy. The wedding started at 5pm and was to go until 5am. We tapped out around 1:00. When you aren't drunk the craziness is just crazy. :)
I think Phil actually looks cool in these. It's a shame he has 20/20 vision.
Last minute view of our bathroom before we left to come home. At first I wasn't impressed, but then I got up close and realized each tile was hand painted. Actually really gorgeous!
Our room. Apparently 100 years ago this was some sort of municipal building. I couldn't help but wonder what this room was. It had those weird cubbies and cupboards up there. Great trip-but so great to come home to see my babies! They loved their souveniers! I loved going through customs and the guys said, "welcome home." I could have cried. :)
